Question about NDP employment for wave measurement

Posted by Saulo Meirelles at March 11. 2008

Dear all,

I'm looking for detailed information about how can I extract wave signals from NDP equipment. I've worked hard on NDP data files using  the PUV techinque but the results were not good. Following some questions:

(1) Are the orbital velocity  in the file *.wad (columns 6, 7 and 8) referred to the surface? If no, What is the depth that each beam measures the orbital velocities (x, y and z)?

(3) What is the distance between the pressure sensor and the top (or bottom) of the equipment?

(2) How can I get the NDP manual for detailed information?

Sincerely,

Saulo Meirelles

Hello Saulo,

The NDP is one of Nortek's first generation instruments and therefore it was not really optimized to measure waves.  In fact, you would have to set it up at the very fastest profiling of 1.7 second even to begin to resolve waves.  Furthermore Nortek does not have any post processing tools to estimate wave parameters for this instrument.

The *.WAD file is an ASCII output file that has not association with the NDP.  Therefore it is likely the instrument is a newer generation, which can be used with QuickWave for processing wave data.  Contact Nortek if you need further help identifying the data type that you may have recieved.

The pressure sensor is mounted near the head of the NDP.

As you are aware, I have sent the manual to you via email. If there are others that are still looking for this manual, then please contact Nortek directly if it has not yet been added to the documents found on our support page.

kind regards,

Torstein
