Up to Vessel mounted

Welcome

Posted by Paul at January 19. 2004
Not before time, we have opened a new forum on the Nortek website tackling the issues associated with the Nortek vessel mounted current profilers. This topic deals with 2 Nortek hardware platforms, the VM-NDP used on many survey vessels, and the VM-CP which is the AWAC based instrument.
This forum will tackle inquiries and problems regarding most aspects of usage of the systems and the processing of the data.
Send your questions or comments, and someone at Nortek or other users of the board will answer.

These Boards are proving to be a useful tool both for Nortek (as a form of feedback) and for the customers as an added source of information, allowing them to get the best out of their Nortek instrument. We encourage you to use it.
Best Regards
Paul

I like to know if the AWAC 600kHz is suitable for moving boat applications. One of our clients is interested in mounting a ADP /ADCP on a pole and stick it facing down from a vessel, and feels that a continential may be too big for this kind of installation.

If it is possible to measure from a moving boat, will the system do bottom track, and for what maximum water depths?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,
Your in luck, the bottom track algorithm works with both the 1MHz and the 600KHz  AWAC. The 600KHz has a maximum range of approximately 50m, depending on the water quality, though it will track the bottom deeper. To get your existing AWAC to work you will need to purchase the Survey VMCP software and Bottom track firmware.
To get the system to correct for the boats movement, and to position the value in a sensible place you will need the following.
To give the current relative to the vessel, you need just the AWAC
To give the current relative to Earth coordinates (ENU), you will need an external Compass/Gyro with digital output (NMEA) or, if the boat is not magnetic, the internal compass can be used.
To give meaningful positions on the chart you will need GPS.
If you are operating out of range of the bottom, a good DGPS system can be used to replace the bottom track.
