NS/EW problem

Posted by student-B at August 02. 2004
I'm using ExploreP (ver. 1.13) and the values I get in the NS/EW coordinate system don't make sense. Could it be, that the program switched for some reason NS and EW values? Cause than it would make more sense. It may seem like a silly question, but I don't understand it.

NS/EW problem

The problem you are seeing is most likely a calibration error.

If you get current direction out to the side of the vessels course, and these follow the vessels heading instead of the compass the most likely error is that the calibration is wrong. Even a small error in heading offset can give a surprisingly large error. This type of error often gives current speeds close to the vessel speed. Check the correct setup file is being used (.rcf). or that the head has not rotated since the calibration was performed.
When using the NDP in Vessel mount mode (or upside down) the system requires that you change an internal switch (orientation, p 12 in the operations manual). Not doing this will result in the Y axis being erroneous.
Another 'feature' <img src=" />;)'>  with older SurveyNDP software versions is that when selecting a new setup file, the default correction type is  'raw' and not 'corrected'. This results in the currents seeming to follow the vessel.

The newer VMCP (or AWAC with vessel mount firmware) do not have these problems and will autodetect the orientation of the instrument automatically.
