Please, some assistance to understand the item PROCESSING/SETTINGS/PROCESSING/Map to vertical in the Storm software

Map to vertical is something we do in the post processing of the data to improve the estimates of current if a profiler has considerable tilt (e.g. 10 degrees or more).

The estimates of currents (in East-North-Up, ENU) use the profiler's beam orientation, tilt, heading to convert to an ENU frame of reference.  This conversion assumes that the Nth cell for each beam is at the same vertical position or depth.

What happens when the instrument is tilted severly is that the cells are no longer at the same depths for the different beams.  Therefore if we want an estimate of the current in the ENU coordinates for cells that are at the same depth then we have to (1) first select the intended depth from the profiler's configuration, (2) and next find or Map a cell from each of the beams that is at this same level.  Often this true position is between two cells, so we are required to perform a linear interpolation of the estimates from these two cells.

You can imagine that if the profiler is tilted severly, then cells that are at a great range can have quite different vertical positions.
