Data Quality

Posted by Lisa Hancke at January 11. 2008

I want to know if it is possible to export the quality of the data measured in each bin by the Nortek Continental using Surge or other software.
I am comparing data from the Nortek with a RDI 75kHz ADCP and have picked up a high percentage of bad data bins in the RDI ADCP and want to find out if the Nortek the bad data was picked up in the Nortek aswell.

Hi Lisa,

Sorry none of us have been good enough to answer your question.

The Storm and Surge software does have quality checks of the data for the current profiles.  The application of quality control is done when you process the current profile data.  The settings for this are found in the processing settings and have three manners in which we quality control the data.

  1. Data rejection

          a) removal of data with low SNR  (low SNR leads to high uncertainty in the measurements)

          b) removal of data with spikes in the SNR (unwanted target in path of beam)

          c) removal of data where the velocity estimates appear as outliers from the remaining currrent profile.

  2.     Surface removal

The surface is defined by either the pressure (bottom mounted) or signal strength (surface mount).  A percentage of the distance to this boundary is specified and data outside this limit is rejected.

3.      Processing

         a) There is a map to vertical function that uses cells that are at the same level to recalculate the current profile.  This is applies to profilers that had the misfortune of being tilted during deployment.

         b) A Two beam solution may be used if one of the beams had been blocked.  This solution assumes a vertical velocity of zero in order to recalculate the horizontal components once the two "good" beams are specified.

Hope this helps,

Torstein

PS we are working on improving this operation and includeing more processing/ QC of the data, so stay tuned.
