Spam in the forum

Posted by Atle Lohrmann at December 11. 2006
As you may have noticed, there has been an increasing number of spam postings in the forum.  We see this as being part of a dominant trend in Internet communication, where legitimate traffic is about become smaller than the sum of all spam emails and all sorts of hacking, spoofing and server attacks. If you are interested in this, we invite you to talk to your own Webmaster and take a look at a typical visit log for your WEB site.  It is pretty chilling to see what is going on.

After some internal discussion, we have decided to maintain a policy where we allow people to post in the forum without excessive moderation. It can be quite frustrating to have to wait 12-24 hours for a posting to appear and we don't see this as viable option.  For now, we have instead decided to stay vigilant and delete the spam postings as they appear.

The spam problem is getting worse.  We will try to keep the board open but I am afraid it is just a matter of time before we have to do a prequal. on new postings.  Ahhhh...

Oh - btw - if anyone with a *.ru domain tries to register you can't. Sorry about that.

The Spam war goes on.  During Easter, som joker planted 50 messages and it took us several hours to get rid of it all.

At this point we have decided to look at it as a challenge <img src=" />:('>

One of the steps we have had to take is to stop people from registering using standard email providers like aol, yahoo, etc.  This will also affect the innocent so you may find that you cannot register with your favorite account.  The way around this is to use a "real" email address. There is no need to worry about this - we promise not to use your email address for anything but forum related stuff.
