An article about the Nortek ATON System was published in the February 2009 copy of Sea Technology. The article, written by Steve O’Malley (OceanTechUSA) and Chris McGrath (NOAA), describes how the ATON System is used to measure real-time current profiles in support of vessel safety and port efficiency.
A nice example of the ATON System at work is offered by the Stevens Institute in New Jersey. The Stevens Institute operates a Nortek ATON System mounted on a Coast Guard Aid-to-Navigation buoy in New York Harbor. The ATON System uses a 1 MHz Aquadopp Profiler to monitor the current profile in the navigation channel. These data are compared to a regional numerical model and displayed in real-time on the New York Harbor Observing and Prediction System (NYHOPS) website: http://hudson.dl.stevens-tech.edu/maritimeforecast/maincontrol.shtml
To view the real-time current profiles, select:
* Region: Vertical Current Profiles
* Parameter: Stevens on ATON 30, NY
