speed of download

Posted by Rachel Helsby at October 02. 2009

Hi,

Is there anyway of calculating how long it should take to download 100mb of AWAC data? Also, as I imagine the answer is hours rather than minutes, how can we increase the speed of the download? I've read on other posts that a RS-422 cable may help - I haven't used one of these so do I need a convertor from rs-232? what is the optimum cable size? can we do a direct transfer to an sd card? What is the best baud rate for download?

We're downloading on the boat so any increase in speed is desirable.

thanks

Rachel

Dear Rachel

I don't know the age your system but it has been possible with all AWACs to use RS-422 communications (with a USB converter at the PC-side) and achieve download rates of about 500 kBaud.  This would mean that 100 MB takes about 40 minutes.   What you need is:

  • A RS-422 Internal Harness for your AWAC
  • A USB-422 converter (I think we have a list of the ones we have found can do the job)

For newer AWACs, fast download is possible also with RS-232.
