measuring SSC with vectrino

Posted by Abbas Hooshmand at February 18. 2010

Hi,

In order to have an estimate of SSC (suspended sediment concentration), I want to use the vectrino. My question is that which parameter and which formula should I use to calibrate the ADV? In this paper "Suspended Sediment Concentration Measurements of Muddy Sediments with an ADV" by Salehi and Storm, it is mentioned that we should use the SNR. However, I know that some people have used AMP avg to (Using  formula like SSC = C1 * 10 ^(0.0434*amp) . But, my amp is too large to use in that formula. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Dear Abbas

The Vectrino receiver is linear.  All our other instruments output the signal strength in log units.

Dear Atle,

Thanks for your reply. Could you explain it more? Is that right that we should calculate BSI with BSI = C1 * 10^(0.0434*amp) and then SSC = F(BSI) ?

My amp is too large to put into BSI formula and that's my problem. Thanks.

Dear Abbas, the strength of the return signal (SNR) is 10log10(Signal/Noise) where Signal is the amplitude you measure and Noise normally is set to around 5 counts.
