Vector Software v1.29 - Echo Sounder option

Posted by Andrew Hume at March 10. 2009

This is probably a silly question, but I've spent the better part of an hour trying to figure out what the Echo Sounder option does. It is located in the window that pops up when you convert a vec file (after you click the convert arrow) with the other data files. There doesn't seem to be any difference if you click it or not - the output files are the same regardless.

Thanks any my apologies in advance if this is a dumb question.

Cheers,

Andrew

Dear Andrew

The echo sounder mode was introduced so you could keep track of the distance from the probe to the bottom.  The center transducer transmit a short pulse that is continiously recorded as it is scattered back into the three receiver elements.  The software can then (in post processing) estimate the position of the bottom.

The echo sounder mode automatically kicks in for less than 1s every time a new burst starts.

In order to collect the data, you do not only need the software but also a fairly recent version of the Vector firmware.

Hi Atle,

Thanks for your reply, I think my question was unclear. The Echo Sounder distance what is given in the .VHD file after converted from the .VEC file, correct? If that is the case, it seems this information is given if the echo sounder box ticked and also when it is not ticked. So I am unclear what ticking the Echo Sounder box does. I do have the latest firmware and v1.29 of the Vector software.

Cheers,

Andrew

Dear Andrew,

Output of echo sounder distance was an option in previous versions of the software. Since version 1.29 it is always output. The check box has no effect and should have been removed. Thanks for reporting.

Best regards,
Oistein
